Every one of us has the same amount of time within any given day, yet some of us seem to be more effective with our time than others. When you are effective with your time, you often experience a reduction in stress and an enhanced quality of life. Much like any other skill, to improve time management requires focus and practice. Implementing the tips below will allow you to improve your time management skills.
Spend Time Planning your Time
While this may seem counter-productive, planning your time before you engage in any activities will enhance your performance. Spend time once a week planning your entire week, and then spend time each morning before beginning your day planning the activities that you need to accomplish within that given day. Planning will allow you to focus your attention each day on the most important activities, rather than spending time being overwhelmed by the quantity of work that needs to be completed.
Learn How to Prioritise
The truth is that most of us will never complete every single task that needs our attention on a daily basis. So, spend time prioritizing which activities are crucial, which are important and which are not urgent on a daily basis. Crucial activities are those that you should divert your attention to first. Next, focus on the important but not urgent activities to prevent them from becoming crises. Then, when you have time daily, focus on the not urgent tasks.
You can take time management one step further and create a mini- list of tasks to complete each day. This list should contain 4-6 items from your master list that you need to focus your attention on for the given day. Breaking time management into bite sized pieces will make things much easier to manage, not to mention reducing your anxiety levels.
